What's Genius HOUR?
Genius Hour is an idea for the classroom based on Google's 20% time. It gives students authentic, real world opportunities to refine the skills they are learning.

Why Genius Hour?It promotes, supports, and models creative, innovative thinking and inventiveness. It also allows students an opportunity to discover/investigate one of their passions and reflect on/share their learning with others.

What will they do?They can master a skill, create something using their imagination, gain knowledge about a topic, solve a problem in an innovative way, come up with a product, or serve/do something for someone else. At the end of the semester, students will share what they have done with our class and possibly the world. They can do this through videos, blogs, pictures, etc.

What makes America great is our drive and desire for innovation. The corporate world has a strong demand for those who are not simply "cogs in the machine." We need to create students with the skills to find unique solutions to real-world problems and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively.

In his article on Edutopia, A.J. Juliani said, "When you see a tenth grader try to "clone a carnivorous plant," or a ninth grader learn sign language to communicate with her deaf younger cousin, or a fourth grader produce his own movie, then you'll know why 20% rocks."
